A primary source is an artifact (document, realia, image, painting, etc.) produced during the time period under study. Typically, primary sources are contrasted by secondary sources, which are works about or derived from primary sources. Most works of history, relying on primary sources as evidence, are considered secondary sources.
The library offers a Primary Source research guide available at http://libguides.library.vcsu.edu/primarysources to assist you in locating primary sources.
